The Wednesday before the reading, join Ali in conversation with expert panelists sexual health and violence prevention educator Tuval Dinner Nafshi, Jeff Perera from Higher Unlearning and Jake Stika from Next Gen Men discussing why men are essential contributors to the fight for gender equality and how we can transform notions of masculinity and what it means to be a man.

MEET THE PANELISTS:

Tuval Dinner Nafshi is a violence prevention educator specializing in healthy relationships, consent, gender equity and healthy masculinity. Over the past decade he has facilitated workshops and delivered presentations for thousands of young people, educators and community members on issues relating to sexism, sexual violence, healthy relationships, gender equity and eliminating violence from our lives. Having worked in Ontario, British Columbia and Ireland Tuval brings a wealth of diverse experiences to this position. He received his social work education from Grant MacEwan University and University of Victoria.

Tuval is currently a Community Developer for the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters. He has also worked on promoting children’s rights, positive father involvement and meaningful sexual health education. Tuval has previously worked for the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre, Centre ontarien de prévention des agressions (COPA) and the White Ribbon Campaign.

Jeff Perera For over 12 years, Jeff Perera has spoken to audiences across North America on how society’s unattainable concepts of masculinity impact people of all genders. He engages men in striving to be allies towards change, and ‘be the lesson in action’. Jeff has delivered two TEDx talks on healthy vs harmful pursuits of Identity and Masculinity: Words Speak Louder Than Actions and The Ladder of Manhood. Jeff started Higher Unlearning as an online space to explore how ideas of masculinity impact us in everyday life. You can read Jeff’s written posts, hear podcasts and interviews with him, as well as links to his Huffington Post Canada pieces there.

Jake Stika As Next Gen Men’s Executive Director, Jake is a passionate speaker and facilitator focused on gender-based issues related to the social and emotional development of young men, the health and well-being of men in communities, and gender equity in workplaces for a future where boys & men experience less pain, and cause less harm.

Jake was named one of Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40, as well as having earned recognition from Ashoka, the British Council, and the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion. He has spoken at the United Nations as part of the Canadian Delegation, and participated in the UN Women Safe Cities Initiative Global Forum. He is also a proud advisor to the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association, Canadian Women & Sport, as well as the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter.
